Our special music episode! Marc talks with journalist Jack Boulware, whose new book "Gimme Something Better" details the history of the Bay Area punk scene. And guitarist Brett Netson from the indie rock institution Built to Spill stops by the garage to talk about life on the road. Plus, Marc takes inventory of the music that defines him.

Sorry to break up all this talk about shoes, but someone should mention that Brett Netson's band Caustic Resin made o of the greatest records of the 1990s, 1998's "The Medicine Is All Gone" and 1999's "Trick Question." Glad that Bret Netson is finding success with Built To Spill but it all seems anti-climactic next to those epic Caustic Resin records...

Great show Marc. Just what I wanted, some balance in the interviews. Being the same age as you, I remember how music and drugs were inseparable back then. I never get tired of drug stories. The Jerry Garcia experience was hilarious and reminded me of a show I went to featuring a very stoned David Crosby.

More advice from experience. Find someone who you look up to, respect, and admire greatly and discover that they think the habit is foolish.

Personal experience tells me that the best advice you can get about kicking the habit is as follows.

    Stop doing it.

I think Mathew has gone to the Home for Former Maron BFFs, where he\'s rooming with Don from Levittown.

What happened to Mathew? Been too many eps without his good-natured ribbings and provocations (he really knows how to get to you, Marc!). I miss that curmudgeonly rapport you guys seem to have (unless its all a bit and I\'m missing it!).... good stuff though other-wise.

It takes a lot to make drug stories at all interesting to me, but you managed, Dude.

Somebody mentioned the late, great Bill Hicks. Marc, what\'s the truth about Denis Leary -- would you say that he stole material?

Just bought tickets to see you at the Laughing Skull in Atlanta.

Oh, and I have to say, as far as I\'m concerned with comics there\'s Bill Hicks, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Lewis Black and you, Marc Maron.

Yo Maron! You told the acid trip (or mushrooms?) story of the Dead concert that had me gut laughing when I heard it way back on your HBO stand up special. Makes me feel like you read my post. Dug Brett Netson - cool dude. He\'s got it right. Love your monologues, love the whole hangin-by-a-thread-in-this-life kind of thing because it\'s true, these are scary times and somehow listening to you (though you make us face the music on that front) is like therapy; makes me feel like everything is gonna be alright...

Marc, I like the show, just stumbled onto it one day and it\'s one of the better podcasts I\'ve heard. You talked about zines in this episode, and thought that you should listen to this: http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podshows/1246337
It\'s Al Burian, one of the better zine writers today. You might like it, you might hate it. Stay Jewish (if you can help it).

I\'m glad that you\'ve got a new sponsor in Audible, but please -- please! -- do not make it your primary means of releasing this podcast. I like MP3s through this site.
