WTF with Marc Maron Podcast
Jan 5, 2012 7

Russell Brand is fodder for a lot of tabloid gossip, but in The Cat Ranch he's just a guy having an honest conversation. Marc sits down with Russell to talk about addiction, sobriety, childhood obesity, monogamy and, of course, comedy. This episode is sponsored by Audible.

    Hi Mark,
Luv-oo, what a great interview. I have loved Mr. Brand. Listen to his old BBC2 radio shows... Sooo funny. Not to feed into his ego or anything, but I Love his mind! You did a fantastic job in asking fantastic, insightful questions. I have always thought of you as talented, insightful and Brill. ("brilliant to us Brittish"). Cheers!

This is my favorite podcast of yours so far, Marc. And that's saying something, because your podcast is a jewel week-to-week. I'm grateful for them all. I've already listened to this one five times and I'll keep coming back to it.

Really enjoyed this one. Especially the discussion on altruism. The journey into Russel Brand's mind was certainly an interesting one. He reminds me of my therapist. I'm a little surprised that they didn't discuss Brand's reported bipolar diagnosis.

One of the consistent themes of WTF has always been the "this guy and I had a standoff-ish relationship, but now we get to talking and I discover I kind of like him" scenario. This has to do in part with the power of really sitting down and talking to someone, but also has a bit to do with the power of aging. A forty-something Marc Maron is less likely than a twenty-something Marc Maron to go all Nature Channel in the presence of another young buck and automatically consider him to be a threat.

Russell Brand was the first time I noticed this phenomenon in my own life. I saw a special of his about five years back and my two thoughts were: 1. this is pretty funny, and 2. this guy would have seriously pissed me off ten years ago. I remember trying to suss out exactly how narcissistic he really was, and the impression I got was pretty well confirmed by this episode: he's self aware, but the narcissism jokes are pretty well researched -- based on a thorough study of the field.

    Good show.

Really interesting podcast. Russell is very honest and smart, the way he described his addiction and how he got into drugs was fascinating. He was on the right track for enlightenment with weed and LSD but heroine will mess you up.

This was an amazing episode. Thank you Marc and Russell!

The discussion of self-centeredness was most entertaining and insightful. Mostly because I identified with the emotions described and so then was able to feel like the episode was all about me.
