WTF with Marc Maron Podcast
Dec 8, 2011 6

Author Jillian Lauren happens to be Marc's neighbor. Amazingly, that's not the most harrowing thing she's ever been through. She discusses the details of her memoir, in which she became a highly paid escort and a concubine in the Prince of Brunei's harem, as well as her new novel and her life since becoming a mom. Just listed for a second time. Brilliant episode. Really challenged my perception of women in the sex industry. Jillian Lauren is an introspective and complex women, thank you for exposing me to her story and challenging my worldview yet again. I listened with a girlfriend, a survivor of sexual assault, and Jillian's description of the "trap door" escapism literally brought her to tears. Thanks for such a unique episode.

I think there is a lot of common female experience in this interview, a common way of responding to sexual and emotional trauma/experiences. I'm not a sing-y, dance-y, act-y kind of beautiful girl, and didn't receive the sorts of work offers she did. Who knows how I would have reacted in the same situations? Even so, for me, as a female, as someone who has also experienced some weird experiences at the hands of (hetero) males along the way, this interview made a lot of valid points. Maybe it's just a chick thing.

Interesting interview. But just not sure how this fits in to Marc's portfolio. I could have gotten the same interview from multiple other media sources. Marc needs to be careful not to dilute his brand.

I usually love this podcast. It's so personal and introspective with viewpoints that honestly add to my life. It pains me to say this is the first episode I did not like. It was executed well but there was something so sady disappointing. Usually Marc can make even the most self absorbed person empathetic and introspective but this guest is beyond self-absorbed. I could take nothing away from her or from the conversation. Still, I'm sure there are those who could. Looking forward to the next episode and counting Lauren as a fluke.
