WTF with Marc Maron Podcast
Oct 17, 2011 14

After 218 episodes, it takes a lot for a guest to surprise Marc with his candor and sensitivity in a Cat Ranch interview. Norm Macdonald is able to do just that as he discusses his career accomplishments and the darker side of his personality that threatened everything he had achieved. This episode is sponsored by Stamps.com. Click on the radio microphone and enter WTF for a no-risk trial and a bonus offer worth $110.

Dang, where's the volume slider? So loud it's distorting.

I think Norm is the best and the serious parts of this are fascinating, but I think I disagree with his ultimate conclusions on life etc towards the very end of this conversation

This is the most honest interview I've ever heard from Norm. Kudos to Marc Maron for being a great interviewer. Norm sounds human and not the often-aloof comic. His response of faith is compelling and funny and mirrors the real sentiments of many people. Marc has a new fan in me, it takes real talent to get into someone's core. I feel a lot of interviewers don't even crack the surface.

As a younger guy who's into comics like Berle, Benny, Silvers, etc. it's always bothered me that the closest that I'll ever get to knowing them is by parsing a ghost-written memoir that's only based on a persona. This Norm interview's different. We'll never get to read Norm's unpublished novels (the ones that he claims that he's too lazy to write), or meet him in person, but at least we'll have this interview. Norm: probably the most sophisticated comic ever to walk the stage. And that includes Pryor.

I fully and humbly take it all back after listening. That was one of the best episodes ever. Fantastic.

One of the best WTF's I've heard in awhile. Seemed to flow like two guys sitting down & just bsing. "My Dinner with Norm". Only bad mark I could give it is I wish it had lasted even longer.

Kinda surprised that people thought of Norm MacDonald as a doofus. I figured it was his schtick - deadpan delivery, blunt observation of the stupid things people do. I'm biased though. I'm Canadian & ol' Norm actually reminds me of one of my high school buddies. Those Dangerfield comments were stellar. Rodney really should have gotten more respect! WTF. By the way - This podcast rules. POW!

Great conversation. Yes I was very surprised by how Norm came across. I never had any doubt he was a smarter guy than his schtick would sometimes indicate but his thoughtful comments here made a big impression on me.

It's funny how Norm comes across as if he's some kind of uneducated dufus when I doubt that very much. His brother is probably the top foreign ciorrespondent for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and is obviously a smart guy too. I guess there's some story there but only meant to say that I've always thought that there was more to Norm than met the eye - and now I now there is.

    Great stuff.

    Ziggy,

I don't think you'll hate him if you listen to the show. (It most certainly did not suck.)

I had nothing against Norm, but your comment reminds me of my reaction to the Adam Carolla show: "I think I'll pass". Fortunately I didn't pass, and while I'm certainly not a converted Carolla-tard or anything, I think I have some sort of understanding of Corolla as a human being who I can respect even if I don't find him very entertaining. Bobby Lee was a similar experience for me. Of all the things WTF does this is the rarest and most valuable. Marc once said something (referring I believe to his own career -- seems like a safe bet) along the lines of: "Who knows what turns someone into an entity in people's minds?" I think I've figured it out. WTF. It's introduced me to a lot of folks I didn't know in a way that they've stuck in my mind, and it's re-introduced me to people I thought I knew and really humanized them.

This episode was one of the very best

Is it OK to hate Norm Macdonald and hope this show sucks in advance?

Thanks. Now I don't need to send you dozens of one word emails simply stating, "Norm".
