I tried AA for about a month, and then one of the few stable guys running the meetings comes over to me and asks if I had a sponsor, to which I replied that I didn't. He asked me why and I told him that half the people in these meetings need psychological help, and not just these meetings, and that I thought that the abstinence-only route rarely works as a permanent solution... but it's a great first step down the path to sobriety.

He smiled, and then I told him that the last thing I needed was some control-freak with nothing to do bothering me about why I do or don't go to meetings, where I hang out, etc. at 3 AM.

That was the last meeting I went to... I've been sober since the 13th of August, 2009. I miss the meetings mainly because the people were interesting and they let me smoke indoors.

Plus, who needs a sponsor?! I've got a Jewish Mother who teaches Political Science... that beats a sponsor any day.

...and having enjoyed your material about sobriety for years, I knew I'd still be able to laugh about it when I finally did get sober, so thanks for that.

Finding out about Greg was like a having my heart get kicked in the balls. And you're right, comics are special and different, who else can you rarely meet, and know what they truly think and feel, and not know them personally but know a lot of uncomfortable truths about?

Comics... or more accurately, Great Comics.

Woot. Will be seeing Moshe when he's in town in Sydney. I don't really get the conversations about how other countries might not get American humor because different cultures process things and look at life differently.

My counter would be that American [style] comedy is so culturally prevalent on TV in most of the Western world through sitcoms and movies etc... Add to that the internet. That any nuanced American way of looking at the world has already been introduced to them previously. Plus I would imagine a comedy audience is relatively predisposed.

August 9 is special for me too.

14 years ago today Fred died while Stan and I tried to give him CPR. He died of an embellisom caused by Nitrous Oxide. (That's Whip-its, folks, canisters and Ballooons, totally legal in SF, CAL)He had a beautiful blue smile when we found him, looked like Krishna.

Marc, I am so jealous of the fact you are sober. I'm dying and drunk every day. I can't tell you what a good example you are for us still suffering. You are exceptional, Jew has nothing to do with it.

I know stupid, poor, failure Jews. I know successful ones and ones in between. You know we are all somewhere in between.

    Love,
