WTF with Marc Maron Podcast
Jul 18, 2011 6

Richard Lewis stops by the garage to break Marc's chops, but he can take it as well as he can dish it out. He talks about his more than 40 years in comedy, the highs and lows that came with drug and alcohol addiction, and some remarkable encounters with Johnny Carson, Rodney Dangerfield and Bruce Springsteen. This episode is sponsored by Comedy Central.

Christ, now I'm going to have to listen to every interview on this site. You can't find anecdotes like Lewis's Letterman "Maui" story anywhere. They just die with the comic. And these interviews are so honest: listening to Lewis re-assure Marc that Marc's "really, actually very funny," while knowing that Lewis knows that Marc knows that Lewis is thinking, "F%ck, I have more money than this guy," is just so sublime. It's amazing. Just amazing.

In theory this interview was a good idea. I saw who the guest was and said to myself, "that makes sense!" But actually listening to it broke my brain. It felt like trying to quit smoking. Every time he cuts off Mark to make a condescending remark, it irritated me to the point of not being able to think straight. It was like Marc interviewing a caricature of Marc. Or Marc interviewing Richard Lewis. Oh well.

Awesome show, Richard Lewis seemed ready to go deep in a way that Reiser seemed to avoid last week. A lot of necrotic energy in the room, loved hearing the two of you needing to untangle your egos from time to time.
